NEWS: New NFC Chip Expands Use Possibilities

NFC Semicon™ has announced a 3rd generation NFC SystemOn-Chip Platform that comes with more interfaces and use possibilities than existing NFC transponder chips, it claims. It is a ‘single chip solution’ with integrated controller and real time clock that can connect to any type of sensor or other circuit and is fully functioning without battery or can be battery-assisted, for automatic data logging and time stamping, says the company.

The new chip allows for sensors and other circuits to become part of the Internet of Things (IoT), communicating wirelessly through Near Field Communication. In addition existing third party devices can be retrofitted to become part of the IoT, according to the makers.

The chip can be customized for larger volumes and used for virtually any purpose, for example to connect to apparel, medical devices, medication, perishables foods in shops and in the cold supply chain, as well as airline luggage (to detect certain dangerous traces), smart packaging,  and electronic shelf labels.

The founder and managing director of the company, Dutch RFID veteran Marc Bense explained,  “Our latest NFC Sensor Chip Platform is special due to its ability to simultaneously connect and measure up to four (resistive) sensor circuits with very high accuracy, passive, even without a battery. For temperature measurement as an example, accuracy can be ± 0.1ºC. But any other type of sensing is possible, such as humidity, pressure, compliance and temper evidence,” he added.

Based on the project requirements, before masking, the chip is optimized for the selected sensor and/or other circuits and its internal controller firmware functions. Also the 64-bit Unique Identity Number (UID) can then be adapted to contain a “Manufacturer Number” for customer protection and better control of data says NFCSemicon.
