Advancing universal accessibility through HD InfoCode+ | 15-01-2026 |
Longtime AIPIA member HD Barcode, based in Florida, USA, has introduced a groundbreaking new technology: HD InfoCode+. This next generation printed code can embed complete “directions for use” in virtually any language—without requiring an internet connection, it says.
According to the company, HD InfoCode+ is designed not only for people who are visually impaired, but also for seniors and anyone who may struggle to read or understand traditional printed instructions. A standout feature of the new code is its ability to display full directions in Sign Language. Currently available for American Sign Language (ASL)—with each country requiring its own version—the system triggers a locally stored video on a pharmacy PC when the code is scanned. The instructions are then displayed on a monitor, ensuring accessibility even in offline environments. All Sign Language content is expert approved and stored locally, maintaining full functionality without internet access.
The new code is simple for manufacturers to integrate and powerful as a security feature because is a printed code similar to a QR code, so manufacturers can adopt it without additional equipment. The same code can also include optional anti-counterfeiting features and separate embedded information to prevent product diversion. These elements are readable only by authorized smartphones and can be configured in nearly any language. With the EU currently requiring Braille on packaging, HD Barcode notes that InfoCode+ offers an added benefit by providing the entire directions for use digitally. Braille can also be included on packaging to help users locate the code for scanning.
The company has conducted years of testing in collaboration with HP Indigo®, the world’s largest digital press manufacturer. Trials were led by Amir Gaash, who recently retired from HP Indigo’s Israel facility and now serves as a consultant for HD Barcode, as well as testing at HP Indigo’s Georgia site, delivered excellent results, it says.
HD Barcode technology has also been integrated into HP Indigo’s SmartStream Designer software. At the recent LabelExpo in Barcelona, HP Indigo showcased HD InfoCode+ publicly for the first time. In the US, HP Indigo printed several test cartons featuring full usage instructions along with a separate embedded code containing anti-counterfeiting elements and a private message accessible only through an authorized app.
