New consortium seeks smart packaging providers to develop sustainable reusable packaging for large household appliances | 12-05-2025 |

The RePLHA consortium, facilitated by AIPIA member Searious Business, based in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, is at the forefront of creating an environmentally sustainable and economically efficient reuse system for transport packaging in the large household appliances (LHA) sector.
The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) mandates 40% reusable transport packaging for EU shipments and 100% for packaging within the same member state or company sites, the consortium aims to deliver reusable transport solutions for white goods by 2030. Businesses must rethink their strategies. Smart technologies—such as RFID, IoT-enabled tracking, and digital passports—will play a crucial role in making reusable packaging scalable, efficient, and compliant, the consortium believes.
The EU Commission has outlined clear restrictions on the use of single-use materials such as polystyrene and shrink wrap. Moreover, cardboard is also subject to stringent reduction targets and the Commission may reassess its exemption if usage increases. The RePLHA consortium unites companies striving to lead the reusable transport packaging market. By setting system and design standards, the consortium aims to establish interoperability and shared infrastructure for pooled transport packaging, explains the company.
In its efforts to expand, the RePLHA consortium is seeking additional partners from several key sectors. These include pooling companies, logistics companies, cargo insurers, packaging manufacturers, digital tracking technology providers, and recyclers.
RePHLA is inviting smart technology providers, particularly AIPIA members, to join the consortium to drive the integration of smart packaging solutions into reusable systems and be at the forefront of industry-wide transformation. It believes having a seat at the table to co-author the design, compliance, and digital tracking standards that will govern the industry, is a major opportunity. It will ensure that frameworks put in place will accommodate smart labels, digital passports and condition monitoring solutions to enhance efficiency and security.
The organisation is particularly interested to contact:
- Developers of RFID, NFC, QR code & smart label technologies
- IoT & sensor-based condition monitoring providers
- Blockchain & digital passport solution providers
- AI-powered packaging logistics and automation companies
- Packaging manufacturers integrating intelligent features into reusable designs
It believes the move to digitalized reusable packaging ecosystems is inevitable—early adoption prevents disruptions. AI-driven tracking, automated compliance solutions and blockchain-backed digital records will be essential in making reusable packaging systems viable and compliant with emerging regulations. Each stakeholder plays a crucial role in building a seamless, scalable reuse system, and this expertise will help shape a future-proof solution that benefits the entire industry.
Developing reusable packaging systems that reduce waste, ensure regulatory compliance, and minimize costs while maximizing efficiency requires radical collaboration across the supply chain. Integrated digital tracking will allow real-time visibility into packaging movement, optimising inventory management, and reducing losses. Visit: www.seariousbusiness.com/replha
